COMMON NAME: Elaeagnus (Broad Leafed)
BOTANICAL NAME: Elaeagnus macrophylla
DESCRIPTION: A substantial spreading evergreen shrub with glossy, round, green leaves that have an amazing silvery underside. Produces heavily fragrant creamy white flowers in the autumn.
HEIGHT: Can get up to about 4 metres tall in ideal circumstances.
WIDTH: Has the unique characteristic of growing wider than taller, can span up to 5 metres wide.
CLIMATE INFO: Highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of soil types from sandy to loamy. The plant tolerates drought, coastal conditions, full sun and partial shade. Doesn’t like really wet areas. Tolerates the cold and grows in warm areas. Super versatile.
GARDEN USES: An amazing hedging plant due to the plants ability to grow well laterally. Even serves as a great specimen tree due to its unique foliage and fragrant flowering.
CULINARY USES: Produces silvery-red berries that are edible.
